I have an important non-technical, non-mathematical job for the willing participant(s), which is to answer the following question:
When and where did the first widespread and reliable reports of the Hum appear? My Hum work hinges on the work of others as it relates to this question. We all have heard that the Hum appeared “in the late 60s to early 70s” in Britain, but I think we can be more precise than that. Professor Deming did his work in the earlier stages of the Internet, and now, with vast and detailed newspaper and other archives, I think we might find something that wasn’t available 10 years ago when Dr. Deming wrote his seminal paper. Lexus-Nexus, major university libraries (with full text), and other sources might now contain such undiscovered material.
I’d like somebody to take a good, second look at this issue and see if we can find it. Maybe somebody can start by examining small local newspapers near Largs, Scotland, during the relevant period as an example of where to start. If you trip over a paywall on your way to the answer, contact me.
